There
are many local groups that promote the "good"
things about our area.
We do not promote the "bad" but rather serve as a reminder of things
in need of improvement.
Now for something a little different.......

Welcome to Beautiful Downtown Greenville, MS.
Or is it Baghdad?????
Imagine the excitement generated when the Chamber of
Commerce, while courting a business investment prospect, bounces
through the pot hole infested streets, past empty run down buildings, ending
the tour in downtown Greenville. Pride in appearance
obviously is not high on the city councils priority list.
UPDATE!! 11/2/06
The city of Greenville has announced that construction
on Washington Avenue will begin soon.
We will keep you posted.
UPDATE!! 11/17/06
Pardon Our Dust
At last David Lush and WABG have noted the problems
downtown in the Friday feature
"Whats That You Say?" He noted that the city has now begun removing
the old curbs
and place asphalt where the trees once stood. But the city did not paint any
lines to
help drivers. So now some continue to follow the old serpentine route and others
drive straight through.
This looks like an accident waiting to happen.
UPDATE 12/12/06
The city has made a stab at marking the strret
on Washington Ave.
The serpentine configuration remains. Even though the trees and curves are gone
and asphalt has covered the holes we still must drive in a winding one way manner.
But it is reminescent of the winding Mississippi River. The more things change
the
more thay stay the same.
UPDATE 2/8/07
The city council has approved a 6 million dollar bond
issue to repair the city streets.
Another 4 million may come later.
UPDATE 6/14/07
The city council has announced that MDOT will pay the
city 1.5 million for improvements of Washington Ave.
Also the council hasauthorized the expenditure of $513,000
to a Jackson firm to assist with the $10 million bond issue
for street improvements. For an interesting comment see the
June 14, 2007 issue of the Delta Democrat Times.
Benjy Nelkin made some really good points.
UPDATE 10/23/07
On Oct. 19, 2007 the Delta Democrat Times report that a contract
has been rewarded to Malouf Construction of Greenwood for
the long overdue reconstruction of Washington Avenue. The low bid was
$1.324 million.
The project will convert the one-way, two-lane street with a serpentine
design into a straight, two-way, four-lane throughfare.
IF this project is completed, this will restore the street to the way
it was before the 1970's. It has alway been my contention
that the construction of two malls in the 1970's was the direct cause
of the decline of the downtown area.
The DDT confirmed that by mentioning the exiting of of Sears, JC Penney
and later Stein Mart to the more modern facilities.
While reconstruction of the downtown street will be a welcome improvement,
attracting national brand stores back to the area
will be an uphill climb. I wonder if our city leaders are up to the
challenge.
April 11, 2008
The DDT has reported that real progress has been made on the downtown street repair. The project is going as planned.
Milling deteriorated asphalt surface - March
Temporary striping for one way trafic - April
Installing decorative lights - April
Relocating water, sewer, and drainage utilities - July
Pavement repairs - August
New asphalt surface base layer - September
Striping four-lane two-way traffic and parallel parking - October
June 2008
The City of Greenvile has received a 1.47 million dollar grant for the completion of Washington Avenue and other road projects.
